Resources for Beginning Fall 2020 Semester

Greetings SRJC students,

Wow! The beginning of fall semester brings remote classes, power outages, fires, unusually high temperatures. air quality issues, fight for racial justice, upcoming national elections, and COVID; there are lots of stressors surrounding us all. We want to let you know that we are here for you. Student Health Services is offering remote appointments with our therapists and nurse practitioners for all students. Call 707-527-4445 or email to schedule an appointment. Let us help ease your worries, connect you to resources, and support your mental and physical health.

The fires and air quality are triggers for some who faced the fires the past few years. If you are struggling to cope, please considering calling us to talk during business hours. Additional resources include:

  • Disaster Distress Hotline: Available 24/7 to talk in English or Spanish to someone about dealing with fires and/or covid: 800-985-5990 or text TalkWithUs to 66746.

Even before the recent fires we were seeing more mental health challenges and isolation because of COVID.  Some people are experiencing anxiety or depression for the first time; others already have been coping with mental health challenges and are feeling it more intensely. One positive is that people are talking more opening about mental health. Michelle Obama and others are helping break the stigma and encouraging all to speak up and ask for help if needed.

Recent surveys have also found that college students are reporting higher levels of suicidal thinking and distress. Both crisis hotlines and “warm lines” (for those not in crisis but just needing to talk to someone in the moment) are available:

The SRJC PEERS are students that promote resources for mental health and will be planning workshops throughout the semester. Please follow them on Instagram @srjcpeers to keep updated on events and resources. The PEERS also have a Youtube channel and there you will find a recorded guided meditation that we hosted in May. We all feel overwhelmed right now and taking time to focus on breath and getting grounded can be very helpful.

We will get through this together. Please know you are not alone.
