Health Promotion

What is Health Promotion?

Health promotion in higher education helps students stay well by creating environments that support healthy habits. Research shows that student health directly impacts academic success. The World Health Organization's Ottawa Charter (1986) shaped modern health promotion, emphasizing prevention, education, and supportive campus policies. Today, colleges offer wellness programs, mental health resources, peer education, and digital outreach to help students make informed choices.

Modern health promotion goes beyond traditional health education by addressing social, emotional, and physical factors that affect well-being. Colleges use data to guide initiatives in mental health, nutrition, stress management, and overall wellness. By fostering a culture of health, higher education institutions empower students to thrive both academically and personally.

Class / Group Presentations and Events

Student Health Services partners with SRJC's faculty, staff, and student organizations to offer trainings and events to the SRJC Community that raise mental health awareness, share resources, and build skills to support those facing mental health challenges.

Mental Health Training by the Numbers

Mental Health First Aid - 115 Staff and Students Trained

The Mental Health First Aid program teaches how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. This in-depth training provides skills needed to reach out and provide initial help and support to anyone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis.

Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) - 4854 Staff and Students Trained

People trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Each year thousands of Americans, like you, are saying "Yes" to saving the life of a friend, colleague, sibling, or neighbor.
